In a meeting surrounded by mysteries, the indigenous people do not clearly know the topics that were addressed by the Vice President of the Republic and President of the Amazon Council, Hamilton Mourão, with Governor Gladson Cameli this Wednesday, the 11th. But the environmental issue, one of the most controversial issues of the current government, was on the agenda of the press conference given by Mourão before returning to Brasília.
Despite having a different language, as well as customs, they have to acquire external knowledge and cultures. Although this becomes necessary so that this national minority can, in the face of the dominant culture, establish their rights and their claims to the country to which they are subordinate.
Regarding the proposal presented by the Federal Government for the exploitation of indigenous lands, Mourão said that the Indians need to have their own source of income and stop depending exclusively on the State.
Indigenous people have their income
“This is a government proposal and, like any proposal, it needs to be discussed with Congress. What we want is to create alternatives for the indigenous people to have their income. What the Indian cannot be dependent exclusively on the Government”, highlights Mourão.
The Vice President cited examples of experiences that resulted in income for indigenous people. “A successful example is the Parecis in Mato Grosso.
In 2% of their land they plant soybeans and manage to earn income, which makes them have income and greater ability to maintain their culture, their traditions. So instead of waiting for the government to put them on Bolsa Família or any other social benefit so they can survive”.
Although it is still not entirely clear how far the responsibility and power of the Amazon Council go. So Hamilton Mourão guaranteed that the environmental area will be one of the themes involved. “In addition to other attributions, the Council will be a response to critics who claim that the government has no responsibility for the environmental area”.
