71% of ICU beds in Rio are occupied by patients with Covid-19

Covid-19 has changed all the structures of the world, and as this week's edition of The Guardian, the British newspaper, well described, the world has been turned upside down. In Brazil it could not be different, because our health system needs improvement.

THE Health's Secretary do Rio reported this week that Rio already has 71% of ICU beds in the state network occupied by patients infected with the new coronavirus. In the ward, patients who have contracted Covid-19 occupy almost 50% of the beds. Official data are from the state health department.

The occupancy rate of beds by these patients showed considerable growth. Last week, the percentages were 63%, in the case of the ICU, and 41%, in the ward.

But we know that unfortunately many cariocas in Rio are not respecting this period of quarantine, they are going out on the streets without the proper protections.

According to official disclosure, it is known that the numbers from the state network indicate what health professionals have pointed out since the arrival of the virus in Brazil: the available beds should not be enough for all patients.

The last Covid-19 bulletin published by the state was late this Monday afternoon (13), unfortunately it was indicated that 182 people have already died infected by the virus and that another 88 deaths are under investigation. Rio de Janeiro, which also has its Governor infected, has 3,221 confirmed cases of Covid-19 and is the second most affected state by the disease.

What is being done with the lack of Leito in Rio?

As far as we know, the lack of beds, however, is just one of the obstacles in serving the population. The state also needs to deal with the insufficiency in the number of health professionals, respirators and PPE (Personal Protective Equipment).

We know that the health system in Rio was already in crisis for about five years, at the municipal, state and federal levels.

Among the municipalities, we realize that the lack of professionals and supplies is the main criticism. At the state level, the situation is now more controlled, but there is still overcrowding.

However, in the federal network, the Union even sent soldiers last year to give a “management shock”.

Anyway, what we hope is the end of this complex period we are living.
