Rainy Period Causes Rise in Hortifruti Prices in Goiás

Those who needed to buy greens, fruits and vegetables in Goiás this week were startled by the value found on supermarket shelves during this rainy period.

That's because the rainy season, specifically the intense rainfall in the last two weeks, caused an increase in the price of fruit and vegetables in the state.

Therefore, products such as chayote, carrots and string beans had an increase of 100%, according to information from the State Supply Center (Ceasa).

Prices due to rain

The manager of the site's technical division, Josué Lopes Siqueira, explains that the current rainy season is one of instability and oscillation of prices due to the rains.

"We found that production fell and directly affected trade with several hikes," he said. Values varied 60%, 70% and even 100% in almost 20 days.

To give you an idea, on the 24th of January, the value of the chayote box was R$ 60. This week, however, the price rose to R$ 120.

In the same proportion, carrots, which cost R$ 30 a box, went up to R$ 60. The eggplant, in turn, jumped from R$ 35 to R$ 50, while peppers reached R$ 50.

Price charged was R$ 30 before the high.

As Josué exposes, although it registered a decline, tomatoes are still on the rise.

The fruit box went from R$ 100 to R$ 70, but it is still classified by him as expensive and overpriced.
“The flood in SP was local. The whole city was affected and there was a shortage.

However, so far there has been no change in Goiás, there has been no price increase as a result. There is a possibility that companies are looking for products in our state, but for now there are no records. This, of course, can increase demand and values can rise”, he pointed out.

Affected Productivity

“The values varied due to the rain. We had two weeks of intense precipitation, which ended up harming productivity and led to readjustments,” he said.

He mentions that the expectation is that there will be instability in the values until the climate is stable. “The forecast is that everything will return to normal in mid-April, as the weather becomes firmer and production increases”, he stresses.

floods in SP

Also, as reported by the manager of Ceasa, the rise in prices is due to the rainy season in Goiás. So far, he has ruled out any interference due to the floods in São Paulo.

In the early hours of this Monday (10), the Company of Warehouses and General Warehouses of São Paulo (Ceagesp) was completely flooded due to heavy rain.
