Consuming meat has become a habit for most Brazilians. But for Christians, on arrival Lent, the habit is to consume fish or eggs, as a sign of respect, fasting and abstinence.
That is why the demand for fish by Christian families in supermarkets during this period is notable, which commonly causes an increase in prices.
According to Marcos Antônio responsible for the purchasing part of a supermarket chain in Rattlesnake, this year the value of tilapia should increase. “There is no offer from tilapia suppliers, which is why the value is 5% more expensive than last year”.
Odair Aparecido, deputy manager, explained that tilapia cost R$ 16.98 per kilo, now the expectation is for it to reach R$ 17.8.
"If there is any promotion, it will be next week, because if suppliers lower the price, we will be able to buy in greater quantity, reducing the value to the final consumer", he reinforced.

It is not new that the demand for chicken eggs continues to rise in the face of the excessive increase in the price of red meat. This alone made eggs an alternative and, with it, came the increase in prices and it should not stop there.
Gislaine Bebber is the manager of another supermarket chain and explains that the so-called egg measurement is carried out every week. “This week the eggs are costing R$ 5.99, but every week there is a change, around a 10% increase”.
Obeying these characteristics, the arrival of Lent should be with the protein dozen on the heights, being able to reach, next week, R$ 6.60 a tray.
Red and white eggs are usually found in markets, however, according to the manager, the preference has been for eggs with red shells and the explanation is simple.
“White eggs are more sensitive, they break more easily because the shell is thinner, but that does not differentiate the value”, he said.
For those who can't do without a fried, boiled egg or in specific dishes, the information is not very encouraging. Promotions, with a dozen less than R$ 3, are practically ruled out until Easter.
