“We have 5,500 buses in the city and today we are running with 2,000 because demand has dropped a lot. In these 2,000, we also ask that people not walk upright. Just sitting. Therefore, the profitability of buses has dropped too much. These 3,500 buses that are not running have drivers and we need to pay a salary. As the municipality has no resources, we are asking the federal government to help us in this moment of crisis due to the pandemic of the new coronavirus”. Said the mayor of Rio.

Rio Bus reported that at this Thursday's meeting, Mayor Crivella undertook to urgently seek resources in Brasilia so that bus operations in the public transport system continue to operate in the city.

The union, consortiums and bus companies are currently looking for the last resources to keep everything running until help arrives. Since with the isolation to contain the coronavirus, transport is in low demand.

“The coronavirus pandemic has radically worsened the situation of companies and, as the NTU itself, the national entity of entrepreneurs in the sector, has been warning, passenger transport by bus, already weakened by the crisis of recent years, is on the verge of total collapse in the parents until the 5th of April, if no action is taken by the public authorities”, said Callak.

The businessman also added about the moment and the risk of stoppage: “We are living one day at a time. We are picking up the pieces of today to work tomorrow. We have to preserve the jobs of around 26,000 family members who, at this time of war, cannot stop,” said Callak.
