Dollar reaches new record and closes beating R$ 5.25 01/04/2020

After another day of tension in the global market, the dollar closes at R$ 5.26 and breaks a new nominal record. Stock market fell close to 3%.

In another day of panic in global markets, the stock market fell almost 3% and returned to last week's levels. This Wednesday (1), the commercial dollar ended the day being sold at R$ 5.261, with an increase of R$ 0.067 (+1.29%).

On the day, the dollar reached the mark of R$ 5.27, and once again broke a new nominal record in the history of the creation of the real. Soon after, the Central Bank (BC) intervened in the market.

The Central Bank sold US$ 645 million of international reserves. The BC also renewed US$ 500 million in foreign exchange swap contracts – equivalent to the sale of dollars in the futures market – which would expire in May. The currency accumulated an increase of 31.11% in this year.

The Ibovespa index, from B3, the Brazilian stock exchange, ended the day at 70,967 points, with a drop of 2.81%. This year, the indicator accumulated a drop of 38.63%.

The index followed the foreign market, affected by the prospects that the United States economy will be more affected by the coronavirus pandemic than expected. The New York Stock Exchange's Dow Jones index ended the day with a drop of 4.44%.

Petroleum

This Wednesday the intensification of the oil price war between Saudi Arabia and Russia came to a truce. Oil production is being increased by both countries, which has resulted in a global drop in prices.

Yesterday (31), the price of a Brent barrel reached its lowest level since 2002. It reached US$ 22.74, today at around 6pm it was at US$ 25.61. This increase contributed to Petrobras shares, which are the most traded on the stock exchange, rising. Ordinary shares (with the right to vote at shareholders' meetings) increased in value by 0.5% this Wednesday. Preferred papers (with preference in the distribution of dividends) rose by 2.22%.
